Safety Tips for First-Time Volcano Trekkers in Indonesia
Author: Admin10 Jul 2026
Indonesia is home to over 120 active volcanoes, offering some of the most dramatic landscapes on Earth. Climbing active peaks like Rinjani, Bromo, or Ijen is a dream for outdoor enthusiasts. However, volcanoes pose unique natural hazards. Here are essential safety guidelines for beginners.
**1. Check the Volcano's Current Alert Level**
Before scheduling your trek, check the current activity status of the volcano via the official PVMBG website. Never attempt to climb if the volcanic alert level is raised above Normal.
**2. Hike with a Licensed Local Guide**
For beginners, hiring a certified local guide is crucial. They are experts in trail navigation, locating water sources, selecting campsites sheltered from harsh mountain winds, and knowing evacuation procedures.
**3. Carry Gas Respirators and Protection Goggles**
Volcanic gases like sulfur at Ijen Crater or Rinjani can be toxic. Always carry a proper gas respirator mask in your backpack, and wear protective goggles to prevent eye irritation from acidic smoke.
**4. Never Ignore Signs of Hypothermia**
Mountain nights can be freezing. If you or a companion start shivering uncontrollably, experience slurred speech, or feel extreme lethargy, change into dry clothing immediately, drink warm sugary liquids, and get inside a sleeping bag.
