Witnessing the Mystical Blue Fire of Ijen Crater: Preparation and Route

Ijen Crater, located on the border of Banyuwangi and Bondowoso in East Java, is famous worldwide for its rare and extraordinary natural phenomenon: the **Blue Fire**. This phenomenon occurs in only two places on Earth, with Ijen being one of them. Besides the blue fire, Ijen also hosts the world's largest acidic crater lake, displaying a stunning turquoise color.

**How the Blue Fire Occurs**
The blue fire is not blue lava. It is a chemical reaction caused by high-pressure, superheated sulfur gas reaching up to 600 degrees Celsius escaping from volcanic cracks and igniting upon contact with oxygen. This reaction produces a bright blue flame visible only in the pitch-dark night before sunrise.

**Trekking Route Guide**
The hike starts from the Paltuding base camp at 2:00 AM to ensure you reach the crater rim before dawn. The 3-kilometer trail is quite steep during the first 2 kilometers, before flattening out in the last kilometer. To see the blue fire closely, you must descend 250 meters into the rocky crater. This descending trail is narrow, rocky, and steep, requiring extreme caution.

**Keep Safe with Essential Gear**
Since sulfur gases at the crater floor can be highly concentrated and toxic, a **gas respirator mask** is strictly required. In addition to the gas mask, bring safety goggles to protect your eyes from stinging sulfur smoke, a headlamp for navigating the dark path, a warm jacket (temperatures range from 8 to 12 degrees Celsius), and non-slip trekking shoes.
