Mount Rinjani via Sembalun vs Senaru: Which Route to Choose?
Mount Rinjani National Park in Lombok has several official climbing routes, with **Sembalun** and **Senaru** being the two most popular. These routes offer contrasting terrains and scenery. Understanding their differences will help you choose the best path based on your physical fitness.

**Sembalun Route: The Summit Express Path**
Located on the eastern side of Mount Rinjani, the Sembalun route starts at a higher elevation of 1,150 meters above sea level.
* **Trail Features**: The trail begins with open, hot grasslands. The most challenging section is the steep 'Hills of Regret' leading up to the Plawangan Sembalun campsite.
* **Advantage**: This is the closest and most efficient path to reach the Rinjani Summit (3,726 m) on the second day of the climb.

**Senaru Route: Shaded Rainforest and Crater Sunset**
Located on the northern side of Rinjani, the Senaru route begins at 600 meters elevation.
* **Trail Features**: A steady, continuous incline through a lush, shady tropical rainforest canopy.
* **Advantage**: The sunset view from the Plawangan Senaru campsite overlooking Lake Segara Anak is spectacular. It is the best route if you do not plan to climb to the summit.

**Recommended Itinerary: Sembalun Ascent, Senaru Descent**
For most trekkers, the optimal choice is **starting the climb from Sembalun** (to conserve energy for the summit push) and **descending through Senaru** (to enjoy lake views and walk home under the shaded canopy). This combination route is typically done in a 3-day 2-night itinerary.
